Hi,

I noticed that when I view the thermals in Condor, some bubbles are green, some are yellow, red and blue.
What is the meaning of the colors and how does it affect the thermalling?

Thank you

I want to answer with "fly through each color and you will learn almost instantly what each color is".

But I'm in a generous mood, so I'll answer directly: They show the speed of the lift/sink. I think red=fastest, green=fast, ..., blue=sink.

(I think the blue ones actually move down, so that should have been obvious :-)).

well, i thought the same but i found out that some green thermals are stronger than red, and some read are stronger than green, so I
got a little bit confused. I thought someone here can help as I didn't find anything about it in the manual. The only obvious color for
me is blue, that's always sinking air. I tought also that the color may refers to the thermal temperature.

I wish someone could answer me this for sure.

Hi rodfeher!

It's a great idea to post a question on the forum. Mostly you will get an answer from someone willing to be helpful and provide you with the correct answer. Not condescending and incorrect like MarkRebuck!

I hope to answer your question correctly and anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

Red - are thermals that are triggered from flat land

Green - (I believe to be correct) is thermals which are triggered from a ridge line. The sun heats the ridge face and then the wind blowing up the ridge then triggers the thermal. I believe there is terminology for this type of lift but I don't remember it.

'Yellow' - they are to indicate weaker lift around the core of the thermal. You will find if you circle in the colors that pale in comparison you will find weaker lift.

I found from my own experience that 'Green' Lift will be stronger at heights close to the ridge and then weaken off a bit once you are above ridge height.

Thermal strength will depend on, I believe, a couple of things. The first dependent on where the thermal is in its cycle. If its at the start or end it will be weaker. The second is the settings. The variation next to thermal strength in the Weather tab will dictate the strength of different thermals. If you have it set to high then each a thermal could be much stronger or weaker than the last one.

So I think that the colors will indicate the best lift available in that thermal. Just because the next one is red doesn't necessarily mean that will be the same strength as the one you are in - although if it is weaker I would imagine that the red would be not as bright??

When you are using thermal helpers take note of the clouds as well and their position especially when using lift triggered by a ridge and then when you are ready have a go without the helpers.

Hope that helps !

Sprunga

However while Sprunga is quite correct in his comments, he perhaps omitted to say that you can't fly in a competition with the markers switched on!
I suggest you get used to flying without them asap - half the fun in Condor is behaving as if you were flying for real. That is - no help of this kind. I think I only used the markers once, and only then to see why it was I was not able to find lift in an area where I expected it. :)
