Olympia: The easiest way to spot the release will be the site will change :) If you get any error messages whilst trying to load the page you will know the DNS Record is updating and the site will be live shortly. Once we change the record it can take between 4-24 hours for it to full propogate across all the backbone name servers and filter down to those of your ISP.

The reason we use facebook is to simply give people a live update. Just before the old site goes down we will put the forums in lockdown mode so we can capture the latest posts etc.

Thats the best I can say right now although we will look into other ways of letting you guys know as soon as it happens.

Few months ago you asked us (as I can remember, there is a topic for that) to keep our e-mail updated.
So I think it would be nice to use that to send an e-mail to everybody to inform about the v2 release...

We plan to do that, but we dont rely on it because many have not kept their emails current. Even some beta team members had old emails when I called them up for duty in september :D

Or... You can change the TTL from your :
http://www.condorsoaring.com &
http://forum.condorsoaring.com
DNS A records from the default 86400 seconds (1 day) to a lower value to mitigate DNS propagation delay in preparation of the migration.

https://webmonkeyuk.wordpress.com/2010/ ... migrations <-- I'm used to trickle them down progressively this way

Wait... Both records are already set down to 3600 seconds. Interesting ;)

Xavier

BUT: Other factors are at play NOT just what you see there.....
Nameservers..... and TTL surrounding those. Not normally an issue for a web server move, but it could be so in this case - depending on how the Condor Team handle the move, that is.  (what I'm looking at is NOT 3600s)

Also - whilst I use the drop the TTL trick myself a lot (many years ago when 9.6k modems were a neat idea, I used to run the tech aspects of an ISP, so I know a bit about this stuff) - it's not as foolproof as it sounds, as some ISPs ignore or rewrite TTLs.

The same for forum.condorsoaring.com

Too bad I don't have an history about previous TTLs for those records maybe it was originally set like this. :(

@Tom Eagles : Do I have to write a small script/bot that will monitor 77.235.62.216 for TTL drop of those DNS records and warn everybody <1h before release ? :)

SteveK wrote:it's not as foolproof as it sounds, as some ISPs ignore or rewrite TTLs

True, some caching name servers ignore the published TTL and will apply their own minimum (this is out of RFC) .
I think those who are responsible for this should be punished...

Mhhh, I just had a second thought about this...
SteveK, what did you see for a TTL value when you checked ?

I did ask directly the authoritative DNS servers from condorsoaring.com.
Another value may have been reported to you from your ISP DNS.

That would mean somebody (Tom Eagles ?) may have modified the TTL very recently and that would also mean we all have to

= BRACE FOR IMPACT =

:D

When the new forum is ready, will our comment histories be imported or will we need to copy them ourselves if we want to access information in them in the future?

Nothing quite so exciting I'm afraid...I was referring to the TTL for the name servers and associated glue records on the .com gtld name servers (48hours).

As condorsoaring.com seems to be self-hosted, and assuming that there is a server move involved, then they'd need to redelegate the name servers, and that would take time for us to see (as our ISPs will have cached the old nameservers). As these are the .com nameservers there is no 'user' control of TTLs there. I've PM'd Tom with a way to smoothly manage the situation if they wish.

No inside information, but I don't see a specific reason to put the champagne on ice.
