I've seen some negative comments about Logitech joysticks. Can someone be more specific and tell me what is wrong with them. I just got an Extreme 3D Pro and it seems to work okay. Any comments would be appreciated.

The problems that they seem prone to are with the rudder axis spiking, or not working at all. They are comfortable sticks though, and if you have rudder pedals to take care of that duty, will probably last a long time otherwise . .and maybe will be 100% fine.

I have a Wingman Extreme amongst my old joystick collection and true to form, the twist stick only worked for a few months, but the rest of the stick is still going just fine. . .it does have lots of centerplay, but I guess no more than my X-45s developed over time. . . and my Cougar actually came with some centerplay way out of the box (gimbal mod is in the works). If you have this trouble in the future you may be able to take the handle off and clean the pot and get a little less spiking, but for me that fix would only last a few days before it would start again.

I have the same joystick but it does not seem to be able to work with force feedback. It's a Vista machine.

I've had a Logitech stick's rudder go U/S on me in the past, but to be fair, I've had a far more Saitek sticks which suffered problems, and not that long after I bought them either.

The list of Saitek sticks I've had bust on me after not very long at all includes: two X36 throttles on which the rudder thing broke, an X35 which did the same thing, and a Saitek Cyborg 3D Force, on which the rudder jammed over on one side, although to be fair that stick is still usable if I assign the rudder to my pedals.

I currently use a Saitek Cyborg EVO and Saitek rudder pedals (which actually are very good). The Cyborg EVO is a good stick (fecking ugly though, with all those lights and crap all over it, which make it look like you are driving a UFO) but the EVO requires some surgery to make it really usable, because the spring tension is way too high as it comes, so what I did was chop approximately a loop and a half out of the centring spring with some wire cutters, which makes it much looser and the stick now feels a lot more like a real aircraft's stick in terms of resistance. Prior to doing that it used to make your wrist hurt after using it for any length of time because of the stupidly strong centring spring.

Makes me wonder if anyone at Saitek has ever even sat in an aeroplane and even moved the stick around a bit, let alone fly one. So if you think Logitech are bad, for god's sake don't try Saitek, except maybe their rudder pedals, which are very cool.

I have a Wingman Force 3D that was sitting in the basement for a couple of years. It worked perfectly when I last used it, but was used roughly by my son who "borrowed" it for combat gaming. Recently acquired Condor, so I took it out and dusted it off. Both the handle twist potentiometer and the R/L axis control potentiometer seemed to be screwed up.

I am never one to give up (have a bit of hardware kit-bashing experience), so I disassembled it, cleaned and "adjusted"* the "pots", and reassembled it successfully. It is back to working reasonably well.

Problems encountered:

1. R/L axis pot had popped loose from its press fit mounting and would not transit complete length of turn. Cleaned with spray cleaner and after pressing back into holder, it worked properly.

2. Twist rudder control pot was trashy and because of mounting position had accumulated a coating of particles of "stuff". Cleaning significantly improved performance, but did not prevent the "jitters" completely. I am looking for a similar form factor pot to use as a drop in replacement. Ultimately, the twist is to be replaced by a set of CH Rudder Pedals, so it is not high priority.

NOTE: Dismantling and reassembling of the Wingman Force 3D is NOT trivial... If anyone is interested, send a note. The toughest part is reassembling the handle so that the twist control is properly re-engaged.
