[TUTORIAL] 3D objects for Condor Sceneries with Wings 3D

Postby Xavier » Sat Nov 07, 2009 11:55 pm

How to place a simple (or complex) object in your Condor Scenery with Wings 3D in 36 photos
(Updated and completed with Wings 3D 1.5.4 sept 2016)

First of all, I download “Wings 3D” from the official Web Site. It is free. Now, I use the the last stable version is 1.5.4, since 2015, and its works also with the 2.15 version of wings.
Before I use the 1.4.1, since 2011/08 and 1.01, 1.2 version (stable since August 2009 and 2010), but it was not so efficient with import function with all 3ds files.

Design your object as you want. For the purpose, I draw a pass-trough hangar called Hangar69 and I want to make coloured textures and place this textured object in my demonstration scenery YPatatgon1, where I had created a folder named “World”, with 2 sub folders named “Objects” and “Textures”. These folders are used to save .cx files in "Objects" and their attached textures in "Textures".

I saved this object in Wings 3D as “Hangar69”.

This kind of hangar can be made from scratch in less than 3 minutes.

As you can see (only for non English people), the ground in Wings 3D is positioned upon the plane OXZ and the elevations Y, and in Condor it is very different the ground is upon the plane OXY and the elevations Z.

Good flight

You can choose the size of the map. It is imperative to choose "draw edges" if you want to see the pattern of your object in the external file of textures. You access to the render option by a click on the button. Then click OK.

The textured background of the unwrapped map of the hangar disappears and becomes white.

Click left on the line “Hangar69_auv”
Click right on the same line and a pop menu is displayed

Click: “Make External”

Save the map in the Condor SceneryToolkit or another folder dedicated to the ObjectConverter software.

Save as “Hangar69” in BMP file type

Save all the work in the main window

And exit the “AutoUV: Hangar69” window.

Export the selected Hangar in 3D Studio(.3ds) in the same folder.
File -> Export Selected -> 3D Studio (.3ds)

Open Window Explorer and the folder dedicated to Objectconverter software. You can see 2 Hangar69 files, one Hangar69.3ds, and the other Hangar69.bmp.

Launch ObjectConverter, press “Browse” to load the Hangar69.3ds, then Click “3DS->CX”

A popup window “Info” is displayed
If the conversion is correctly done you will read “…\Hangar69.3ds OK”, else “…\Hangar69.3ds error”. Then click OK.

Now in the folder you get 3 Hangar69 files. The last created is Hangar69.cx, but Hangar69.bmp and Hangar69.3ds are still there.

Then in Window Explorer, go to the scenery where you want to place your object. That is, in this example, YPatagon1, where you can see the folder “World” and is 2 sub folders “Objects” and “Textures”

Transfer “Hangar69.cx” in the folder “Objects” and “Hangar69.bmp” in the folder “Textures”.

Open the folder “Textures” you will see the “Hangar69.bmp” file

Open the file “Hangar69.bmp” with Phostoshop or free software to make your textures.

Then make your textures and save the file with the same name and extension, that is: “Hangar69.bmp”

Open the folder “Objects”, and open “Hangar69.cx" file with the Bloc-notes or the Notepad.

The file “Hangar69.cx” is a text file

Open this file and bind the texture.

Save your file please!

Then open LandscapeEditor, load your Scenery (i.e. YPatagon1 for the tutorial) and mark “Airports” and “Ground objects”, zoom to the airport where you want to place your hangar and select your object in the list

Press the point [ . ] Key, the cursor change, and place your object by a click, the object frame is colored in red. You can size and orientate your object with the 2 sliders (use the wheel of the mouse to be precise). You can move the object with the crossed arrows, as your object is colored in red. You can reselect the object with the black arrow.

Then please save your work, by File->Save Landscape!

Open Condor, select the scenery, built a simple task and start your flight

Xavier... i got stuck on ur tutorial´s page 18 when converting.

Ive followed the tutorial step by step while doing the Sugar Loaf (object for Rio). I downloaded the oldDXUtilities and copied the conv3ds to the Condor Scenery ToolKit directory.
Did all the texturing process, rotation and exported to 3ds.

But i open the object converter, select the sugarloaf.3ds and when i click convert it says i dont have conv3ds installed. I have inside the CST directory the objectconverter.exe + conv3ds (i dont have the .dll u wrote on the tutorial, i guess for vista users.

BTW, im using Windows XP.

Can you give me a light, please  ?

Put the conv3ds.exe in the same directory as your 3ds file. Yeah I know, it sucks! :(
