[TUTORIAL] 3D objects for Condor Sceneries with Wings 3D

Postby Xavier » Sat Nov 07, 2009 11:55 pm

How to place a simple (or complex) object in your Condor Scenery with Wings 3D
(Updated and completed with Wings 3D 2.1.5 Nov 2017)

First of all, I download “Wings 3D” from the official Web Site. It is free. Now, I use the the last stable version 2.1.5, since 2017.

Design your object as you want. For the purpose, I built a pass-trough hangar in Wings 3D, and I want to make colored textures and place this textured object in a scenery. In the folder of this scenery (XX/Condor/Landscapes/MyScenery) I had created a folder named “World”, with 2 sub folders named “Objects” and “Textures”. These folders are used to save the object and its attached texture(s).

This kind of pass-through hangar can be made from scratch in less than 3 minutes.

As you can see (only for non English people), the ground in Wings 3D is positioned upon the plane OXZ and the elevations Y (Y is for Yaw), and in Condor it is very different the ground is upon the plane OXY and the elevations Z.

Good flight

You can choose the size of the map. It is recommended to choose "draw edges" if you want to see the pattern of your object in the external file of textures. You access to the render option by a click on the button. Then click OK.

The textured background of the unwrapped map of the hangar disappears and becomes white.

Click left on the line “XXX_auv”
Click right on the same line and a pop menu is displayed

Export the selected Hangar in 3D Studio(.3ds) in the same folder.

File -> Export Selected -> 3D Studio (.3ds)

Launch ObjectConverter, press “Browse” to load the 3ds file, then Click “3DS->CX”. The 3ds file must be in the same folder than ObjectConverter.

A popup window “Info” is displayed.

If the conversion is correctly done you will read “…\XXX.3ds OK”, else “…\XXX.3ds error”. Then click OK.
Move the 2files in the folder dedicated to this object.

Now in the folder you get 3 XXX files. The last created is XXX.cx, but XXX.bmp and XXX.3ds are still there.

Then in Window Explorer, go to the folder of the scenery, where you want to place your object. There you can see the folder “World” and is 2 sub folders “Objects” and “Textures”

Transfer “XXX.cx” in the folder “Objects” and “XXX.bmp” in the folder “Textures”.

Open the folder “Textures” you will see the “XXX.bmp” file.

Open the file “XXX.bmp” with 2D modeller or a free software to make your textures.

Then make your textures and save the file with the same name and extension.

Open the folder “Objects”, and open “XXX.cx" file with the Notepad.

The file “XXX.cx” is a text file

Open this file and bind the texture.

Then open LandscapeEditor, load your Scenery and mark “Airports” and “Ground objects”, zoom to the airport where you want to place your hangar and select your object in the list.

Press the point Key, the cursor change, and place your object by a click, the object frame is colored in red. You can move the object with the crossed arrows, as your object is colored in red. You can reselect the object with the black arrow.

Save your work, by File->Save Landscape!

Open Condor, select the scenery, built a simple task and start your flight

Xavier... i got stuck on ur tutorial´s page 18 when converting.

Ive followed the tutorial step by step while doing the Sugar Loaf (object for Rio). I downloaded the oldDXUtilities and copied the conv3ds to the Condor Scenery ToolKit directory.
Did all the texturing process, rotation and exported to 3ds.

But i open the object converter, select the sugarloaf.3ds and when i click convert it says i dont have conv3ds installed. I have inside the CST directory the objectconverter.exe + conv3ds (i dont have the .dll u wrote on the tutorial, i guess for vista users.

BTW, im using Windows XP.

Can you give me a light, please  ?

Put the conv3ds.exe in the same directory as your 3ds file. Yeah I know, it sucks! :(
