Since I finished Northern Norway 1.0 a month and a half ago I've not been resting. I learnt a lot making that scenery, and I've now taken what I've learnt, and improved on it for my next project. All the base textures have been remade, and I've added some new features as well. And I think it looks a generation improved from Northern Norway 1.0 :) So here's some early screenshots from various parts:

Quite a lot of detail even at low level:

Farmslands and airport in foreground, biggest city of the scenery stretching into the background:

But farmlands and cities isn't what this scenery is mostly about, so here is some more exciting terrain :)

At higher elevations there is less vegitation and more rock (and even some snow):

The scenery is only about 20% done yet, so still far to go. But it should be quite an improvement over Northern Norway :)

You are a master now. But please try think about possible higher contrast and brightness of colors. Scenery will be superb, but for me it is too dark and sad - not sunny day. It is not a critique of course, only my personal feeling.

You're still the master! I flew Czechoslovakia yesterday, and it's a real masterpiece!

You're not the only one who thinks it's dark (at least that was comments I got a lot for Northern Norway). It is dark, but it's quite dark in real life too. And I've discussed with others who fly there too and they agree, that yep, that's how it looks in real life. I guess partly because so much of it is forests, and forests are dark.

Here are some real life photos. And these aren't the darkest photos, rather the oposite, these are some of the brightest photos I could find! Taken by many different pilots and cameras.

A hill facing the sun, as bright as it's ever going to get:

For background, the colors for my scenery was very much inspired by this scenery for FSX, as that just looks so much like how it does here in real life! In addition to looking very good :)

You will see that is even darker. Initially I made my scenery that dark too, but I was a bit too much for Condor, so I brigthened it up a bit. And of course my scenery doesn't look as good as that screenshot, but it was what I was aming for :)

Yes, process of scenery development never ends. I usually feel my new landscapes as a very unsatisfy 14 days after release, so I am rebuilding it again and again and again.. :) It is a long time hobby, so good luck with your work. You have really great textures, I am looking forward for your sceneries.

Some photos I took this summer flying with AXM over western Norway.
As you can see, Norway features a dark and awsome landscape.
I really, really look very much forward to fly from my home airfield in Condor from this high quality masterpiece of a landscape!
I have been flying in Norway a few years now and I think it looks just about right. :)

Cheers!
Kristoffer

Yes, impressive landscape - but there seems to be not very much possibilities for outlanding

There are much more outlanding possibilities than you need.
Eastern Norway(big part of the landscape) is more or less flatland with some forest hill surroundings and wide, flat valleys with loads of landingfields in.
When you head more to the west the mountains get bigger, the valleys get deeper and more narrow, but the landingfields are still there. Or else how can we fly thousands of kilometers of cross country tasks in Norway every year?
In Western Norway, most of the turnpoints are also nice landouts. And there are alot of turnpoints.. :)

It's implied in the earlier posts, but just to make a real announcement, the area covered by the scenery is the logical counterpart to Northern Norway, which is of course Southern Norway :)
It will be a 440 x 415 km scenery, which makes it one of the bigger Condor sceneries. The land area is about twice that of Northern Norway, and more than twice the area of Provence. It will include almost all gliderfields in use nowadays in Norway.
The terrain varies quite a bit. From realtively flat farmlands in the east, to the steep mountains and fjords in the west, and valleys and rolling hills or mountain plateaus in between. Should be something for every taste :)

A stunningly beautiful scenery!

As someone who is working on a new scenery, may I ask how you created the very easy to read and full featured topo map of the region (as shown below)? Any tips would be really appreciated as some one new to this.

Regards,
Chris

With a lot of work, I think would be the short answer :D

I start off with the relief map generated by 3DEM. Then I add the roads, railroads, cities, lakes/rivers/sea and bogs. These I saved as layer masks when I created the tiles, so it's just a question of copying and resizing that layer mask into a corresponding one in the map to add those details but this does of course require you to have created those masks in the first place. It's part of the process of creating the textures in the first place for me, but may not be for you.

Then I add the contour lines. Those I create by taking the height map (the terrain editor will create that initially so make sure to save it as a scenery map while it's still there). I then reduce the amount of colors of the height map to around 20, and run a edge detect on that which gives me the contour lines.

Finally I manually add airports and the names of the most important cities, lakes, valleys etc.

As I said, a lot of work :D

A little update for those interested. The scenery is now about 50% complete, and new exciting areas have been added :)

To show the variety I'll post some pictures from the different new parts of the scenery.

I'll start in the North East corner, where it's highlands with gentle valleys and some mountains. This region is very sparsely populated:
Image

Further south we find huge farmlands, this is around lake Mjøsa (Norway's biggest lake):
Image

Image

In the central part of the scenery it's mostly forests and valleys, with almost all the settlements in the valleys, and wilderness elsewhere:
Image

Image

Further west we get to the mountain plateau of Hardangervidda which separates eastern from western Norway. It's vast, barren, and relatively flat:
Image

Hardangervidda abruptly ends at Sørfjorden, where we've entered spectacular western Norway:
Image

On the other side of Sørfjorden lies one of the biggest glaciers, Folgefonna.
Image

And on the other side of that again follows more steep fjords (Hardangerfjorden):
Image

Image

Further out towards the North Sea the mountains are not as high anymore:
Image

And almost at the extreme west end of the scenery we find K3 (and several other Condor pilots)'s home airfield at Ulven near Bergen :)
