Provence scenery is really excellent. But there is still room for improvement. I mean scenery map. The problem is that the map is created using light source from the bottom (and it is right! Sun is on the South but not on the North in the northern hemisphere). But this contradicts to the human habit when observing pictures (and map is the picture!). You usually expect that sourse of the light is located on the top of the picture but not on the bottom. So with current map hills are perceived as valleys and valleys as hills. If it would be possible to create map with light source from the North then everything will take their places.
See attached pictures. It is the same part of the map - original and rotated by 180 degrees to have light source from the top. What is better in terms of perception and identifying hills and valleys?

I agree with you that a common convention in many environments (PC GUI, USGS maps, etc.) is to have the light source from the upper left of observer's POV and I find that easiest to resolve and understand.
As far as the Provence visualization, have you tried the See-You version of terrain?
I find that one most desirable IMHO.

regards,
KP

The designer on the Provence scenery has lost all source files so is unable to produce any other work, but not all is lost as Provence v2.0 project will start sometime soon.

Then I hope something is done with the Barcelonette area.
When I fly over the rendered airfield my frame rate drops to around 4-6 fps.
It has only happened over that location so far in any scenery package.

Anyone else noticed this?

The Barcelonette tga file is called Barc.tga if you open the file using a graphics editor and then reduce the size of the textures this should solve the frame rate issue.

Do you think that PhotoShop 5.0 LE will handle a .tga file?

I don't have much experience with this kind of stuff is why I ask.

And which function reduces texture size?

thanks

You should also know that we are expecting a patch which will fix the airfields problem within 2-3 weeks.

Incidentally, this isn't only a problem of Barcelonette. All the Provence airfield textures are too large.
