I flew lately several tasks with narrow lifts and I found such problem as in the topic. Somme pilots does not lose time to seek lifts - they flies directly on the lift on each clouds  and I found lift ewery 4...5 cloud (the same time, the same clouds - so no reason on time of lift-live)
Is some rule permitting to obtain such efficiency when doen't work "H" button?

Regards
Andrzej

Andrzej!

1. You may mistake true narrow thermals with normal width but just mixed with windy day (when wind is blowing from wing direction and esp. when u are low).
2. Really narrow thermals are hard to spot (esp. when u're low + there is wind, high cb, or blue day) and as we know - always pain to center. ;)
=>
3. Stay high for easier lift catch.

OK Piotr - I don't think about last task Jantar Cup but about somme tasks with narrow lifts like WGC task, when I am high and spend a lot of time to founding lifts and others make this quick
What does means words: "There is another piloting trick you can do, but I cannot reveal everything  " :?

So what is this trick?

Hi,

when you have enough time before start line opening, try to test as many as possible different looking clouds and then locate where the lift center is regarding sun and wind direction. Some guys use external view to look how the plane is positioned under the cloud after they have found the center. I prefer staying in the plane all the time

As PIT pointed out: stay high when lifts are narrow, there you have more time & space to find the center :)

Hi!

If you're thinking of the "which-way-to-turn-problem", one "trick" is:
When you pull up in a thermal, start a slight right turn... If the lift increases, continue bank to the right ... If lift decreases during this turn, immediatly bank left and BANG, you're right in the middle! (In theory)
Also when there is no wind, and you think you know where the thermal is; turn in one direction (for maybe 20-30 degrees) when pulling up into the thermal and then turn the other way. Saves you some centering time.

When it comes to finding the thermals in windy conditions, there is one trick here also... Fly towards the center of the cloud... Leave the center towards the wind direction, and You'll find lift (hopefully)... One remark... You're gonna spend some more time finding the thermal, but you're more likely to find it. If you just go by where you THINK the center is, well... sometimes you hit, but sometimes you miss pretty badly and you might have to spend even more time finding it.

Another variation of this method is, say you have the wind from behind and a litle left... Fly a litle out to the left so that you enter the cloud with the wind straight from behind. Easiest thing is to enter a thermal directly downwind or upwind.

If the wind direction and strength varies with altitude, thermals can be like a spiral and really hard to find.

Hope this helps...

ER

Very thank You - I did not hear about such tricks yet :)

I apply other method of the centering - on the sound vario - it is goods but not for ASK13 . I set up the time constant 1s for the sound vario and when sound grows - I turn wide and as the frequency drops, I turn narrow. It is necessary also to observe the direction of greatest wears to correct lift changes.

But it doesn't work on narrow lifts when i have full water. I will try your method :D

All above works, if we will pick off the lift (we have a contact with area of raising). Bigger problem I have with "touching" lift when is narrow. I Have several examples in SeeYou, but I must buy the licence - 14 days finished.

I drew this problem below in paint. How they knows, where is lift area in every clouds (100%)? I touch lift area in 20...25% clouds (when lift is narrow) - especially, if lift area under every cloud is in other place?

Thanks
Andrzej
