Hi,

I'm trying to follow ASH33M's wonderful tutorial series, and I'm stuck on #9 'Terragen Topo Maps'. He shows a T:\Terragen_Topo folder with a bunch of files that he copied from somewhere, but I can't seem to figure out where they all came from.

I have Terragen 2.4 Free edition installed, and I did a search for strata1.bmp on my PC, but no luck.

I found a reference to SOPack in a forum post, so I found and installed it (and the required TGPGuiLib). However, now when I try to launch Terragen, I get two messages about Terragen not being able to find startup functions, as shown in the attached images.

It seems I may now have TWO problems instead of just one. First, I still don't know where all the files in the T:\Terragen_Topo folder came from (Generated by TerraGen?), and Second, I clearly have done something wrong with the SOPack installation.

Can anyone help?

TIA,

Hey there Frank, been following your articles over on Soaring Cafe with much interest.

I think the root of your problem is that the tutorials are centered around an older version of Terragen than 2.4. There were a lot of changes between the two editions of the program, and if I recall correctly you need Terragen Classic.

Lurik has a link to it on his tools website: http://www.lurik.fr/CondorScenery/00-Ou ... Outils.htm

I can't offer much more help than that as I'm using a totally different method for creating scenery textures that may or may not work (currently leaning towards "not", at least until I get a more powerful computer). *laugh*

Hey, thanks for the clue. I did notice the version numbers were different, but didn't think that it would make that much difference. I uninstalled Terragen 2, and installed Terragen Classic (I noticed that Terragen 2.4 installed in C:\Program Files\PlanetSide\Terragen, while Terragen Classic installed in C:\Program Files\Terragen as the video suggested).

Now I can open Terragen, but I still can't follow the video tutorial because the next step is to open the .TGW file for my world, but I don't have one (it sounds like ASH33M provided a sample Crete.TGW file on the forum, but that doesn't help me). Am I missing a step here?

Also, I have seen some oblique references to the SOPack utility (which also requires TGGuiLib?) - is this required at this stage of the tutorial?

And lastly, the tutorial references the Strata1.bmp and Strata.bmp files, which are not in my Terragen folder - where do these come from?

Sorry for all the questions, but as I'm sure you can see from my Soaring Cafe posts, I'm definitely a dummy when it comes to scenery creation ;-).

TIA

There should be a .TGW file with the basic required settings in the Condor Scenery Toolkit folder under the "Generic Files/Terragen" folder. That will open up a world with the basic rendering settings set up for you. Then you load in the terragen tiles exported from the Scenery Editor, and follow from there.

As far as Strata.bmp and Strata1.bmp, I think that those are related to the sopack plugin. I'd have a look in the plugin folder and see if they're there.

I'm in the middle of a long-distance move, but I'll see what I can figure out. In the mean time I'm sure one of the scenery gurus will be along pretty soon. :D

You can download my old "tutorial", which Geoff used for his video here: http://www.condorworld.eu/index.php?id=230
(Textures - tutorial). There are some tgw files as example.

Thanks - I got the tutorial, and it appears to consist mostly of the 'draft manual' - is this correct? Unfortunately, I'm stuck on the first step, which says I need *two* Terragen installations - one with SoPack for textures, and one with SoPack for topo maps. Is this correct?

Is there a document anywhere that describes the overall road map for creating a scenery? I have been going through the video tutorials one-by-one, but I'm rapidly getting lost in the weeds; Maybe I'm just not smart enough to be a sceneries guru ;-).

TIA,

this manuall is more example than exact steps. Is not possible keep these steps exactly - it is more artwork, it depends on terrain atc atc. Terragen is only helper for topo map, relief... I was learning how to create scenery six year, and I am still finding new possibilities, so my recommendation is: start your first scenery with classic old design by the manual from Condor scenery toolkit. Geoff´s videos will help you with TRN, callibration. Select as small area as possible (four tiles for example) and you will find soon your own way how to make scenery with design you like. No worry - first few months you will understand nothing :) , it is normal. Scenery development is work for years, not hours.

Great - I get to look forward to at least two more months of understanding nothing, followed by years of labor! ;-).

Hmm, and I thought I was just going to breezed through a scenery so I could write a Condor Corner article about it - oops! ;-).

Hi I search in this forum but I can find any related to errors in Sopack. I missing the Distribution Texture "SO Strata Overlay" The field is empty the first time I open it. (with the world file Topo_Map.tgw)

I tried with the other options but the error messages i got is "Strata map needs to be square!"

Can anyone help to find "SO Strata Overlay" I tried to uninstall terragen and reinstall but the problem is still there :(

Try topo.tgw - file from my previous topic (strata.zip). Or rename strata.bmp file

I think now that terragen wants to have a bmp to make an overlay over terrainfile, Not just to get the colours for the height.
and thats why it's want to have a square bmp.
I think there is a change in Sopack? or?

did you export your terrain files for terragen - trn files - from Condor scenery toolkit? You need download terrain to terragen too.
