I am looking to either help or start building and will need help a terrain for the Minden area including the Greatbasin area.

This terrain will need to comprise of eastern California and Nevada.
If we can squeaze in Arizona and Utah that would be a bonus.

If you are interested in working on this with me private message me on here or email asw22pilot@gmail.com

Hi Al,

I have already created RAW formatted files for most of N-Cal within the following boundaries:

124w-39n NW corner to 119w-37n SE corner.
Image

Approx. Eureka w to Pyramid NV
and just N of Monterey w to around Rogers Crossing CA

Since I fly out of Williams I focused on the Mendocinos where I'll be doing my CC training this season.
As you can tell from the boundary limits, I've included Eastern CA and some of Nev. cuz I'll prolly do some flying out there too IRL.

I'm just waiting for the toolkit to proceed.

The process of producing RAW format terrain mesh is not hard and easily can be produced to include the Southern NV and UT areas you're thinkn about.
I can help where I am able (really not a computer/designer/3d whiz).

toodles,
K

Sorry that my previous map was a bit generous compared with what I actually have compiled. I was at work trying to recall the limits of my efforts.
124w to 120 w
and
40n to 38n
This is a representation of what I have done in RAW format.

no big deal tho'
The process to get the binaries is not hard. We can go anywhere.

problem we will have is NV is bigger then the size of most european countries.

So we might have to limit the soaring area's to like "the whites" and surrounding. Then make an Ely Map etc etc.

Is there any guidelines on size of terrain files Condor can support before it chokes.

This may sound daft, but try rotating the capture area by 90 degrees thhat may include san fancisco and the valley. :)

Its not the valley that really works, its the Sierras and high desert to the east.
I might actually discard the valley and the Mendocinos cuz I only included that space where I fly.

I should extend the tiles further east and a bit south to include the Vegas area.
hmm... a portait orientation of the east CA/W Nev. region might work for one slab.

Much time to think...dunno when the terrain toolkit will arrive.

If you can get the Edge of the Valley to Vegas, that would be interesting. :)

kloudy,

Looking at your screenshot when using 3dem, I would suggest to start with a 3x3 grid of 1 degree tiles, the reason for this you will become clear once the Scenery Toolkit has been released.

Need any more help just ask.

OK the toolkit is out..

I suggest as the software cannot handle the entire Great Basin area that we work on localized areas.

These can be defined as
Minden, Truckee, Airsailing, Lake Tahoe Centric map.
Minden south to Cero Gordo Peak and east to Tonopah
Ely to Tonopah west as far as Hawthorn and up to Idaho Boarder
Minden east to Ely to Tonopah and Austin NV.

I will try and build the tile collections we need for these area's in the next few days as well as post Google Earth links to demonstrate the scenery areas.

Regards

test tiles under way

I have a rudimentary start of NCal and Mt Shasta areas texturizing as practice.
Here are some images of the Sutter Buttes near our glider port in Williams.

WOW i have tremendous respect for the patience and skills of Uros and Gregor to have created what they have so far.
This terrain thing is TEDIOUS!

Great Job Kloudy

Did you read my earlier post about the area's that would be best to model in the GB.

Those are based on my flying over this terrain and they are the "hot spots" in the GB flying area.

Question can Condor simulate thermals to 18,000ft :)

or Wave to 40,000ft + ;)

will look at assembling the tile sets this weekend unless you want to pick an area and run with it.

Regards

kloudy,

Just a thought, the SRTM data that your using is this version 1 or 2, version 2 has a lot more voids removed but you will still need to remove the rest when using 3dem.
