Freetrack : "TrackIR" for free...

Postby didja » Thu Jul 05, 2007 2:25 am

TrackIR is a very immersive accessorie, but very expensive too...

The_target, a programer, has created a freeware wich is Freetrack.

Using four LED IR fixed on a cap (it will be available using only three LED fixed on the ear-phones), you can enjoy this imerssion ! :D

I decided to help The_Target and I've created a website for the project.
On the website, you can see videos (one video is on Condor).

The website is available in french and in english (but the translation is a Google one because I can't do a real one :?).

I hope you'll enjoy it and... if you want, let a word in the guestbook ! :D

With pleasure ! :D

It's free and open, so a mod will be available soon because all programers can try to improve Freetrack ! :D

Usually, we open the file with 7zip but a new version is available on the website (since 17h21 GMT) wich is an auto-instalable package including all the needed files and the english manual :D.

The file is an executable one so you don't need 7zip to open it ! :D

There are some shops which are specialized in the electonic articles sale, I found my DELs in this kind of shops.

You can find any DELs on the web, but it's more expensive usually...

Yesterday I solder LEDS  to the copper wire skeleton, and attach to my Cap.

Program find lights easy and then I try it into Condor!

What can I say?!

WOOW !!! It works great!

I made some changes in the curves for the axes response and I think, I can use it now well.

Hardly wait for the evening, to join some race and test that tracking device "in real" !

Thanks again for sharing with us that simple and cheap, but effective gizmo and a free software!

Wow clever stuff - having TrackIR 4 I can't say I will be trying it myself but it sounds good - would love to see a video of it "in action".

I try once TrackIR at my nethew, who test it for one PC magazine. I was amazed!

But nethew told me, that somethimes TrackIR goes mad if pilot move head too much around or out of reach of IR camera. (mostly when operating some controlls on the desk..throtle, flaps ect... )
When returning head toward PC monitor, virtual head stuck at some odd position...

As far as I test this free gizmo from didja, I can go even outside room, and when I sit on the chair again, the view work as it should.

The only problem I encounter was, that behind me, there is a door for my room. So if someone open that door and light from the corridor came in my room, there is a tweak in the view. Obviously the camera gets confuseed from backlight, and program had hard time finding four bright lights there...

But, I can write on my door (on corridor side): "ON THE AIR!" :D not to be disturbed when flying.

And one more thing!
I didnt realize till now, how often I scratch my head during flight! Now with cap on the head it is impossible :D :D :D
